Membership
“You make my working life have more meaning as I am no longer fighting for people’s rights as an individual, but as part of a much larger group of people within a national recognised organisation.”
Become part of a national network of organisations and individuals committed to a fairer justice system for children and vulnerable adults.
What is NAAN?
NAAN is a charity and membership organisation, working to create a fairer justice system for children and vulnerable adults by maximising the effectiveness of the appropriate adult safeguard.
We provide a centre of expertise and a community for anyone interested in the appropriate adult role.
Use the top menu to find out more about what we do, who we are, and who our members are.
Who can join?
- Membership is open to a broad range of organisations and individuals.
- We have three tiers of membership: bronze, silver, and gold.
- Each tier has different membership benefits - see table below for more details.
- We have two types of membership: full (for appropriate adult provider organisations) and associate (for everyone else).
- The only difference between full and associate members is that only full members can stand for election to the Board and vote at the AGM.
- You don't need to become a member of NAAN in order to act as an appropriate adult.

“NAAN has given me the tools to develop the somewhat haphazard list of volunteers into a trained and supported provision.”
“Being able to contact NAAN by email or phone when I have queries and to get a prompt response makes my role much easier.”

- Remote meetings can be great, but we love getting our members together in person!
- Silver and Gold members have the opportunity to book tickets at no additional cost.
- Reflecting different membership fees, the number of free tickets varies for individual members (1) and different sizes of organisation, from 2 (small) to 8 (very large organisations)
- There is always limited availability due to venue restrictions, so ultimately we can't guarantee that spaces will always be available.
- All members are informed that ticket booking is live at the same time via email, and booking is first come first served.
- Sometimes we may sell tickets but only if there are spaces remaining after Silver and Gold members have had a fair opportunity to book free places.
What is expected of NAAN members?
The National Appropriate Adult Network (NAAN) is committed to improving both the range and quality of appropriate adult services in England and Wales. In order to do this effectively, we ask all members to operate under the following committments.
Please ensure you have read this information before completing a membership application.
1. Equity, diversity & inclusion
NAAN is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, as set out in our EDI Statement. By applying for membership, an individual or organisation confirms their commitment to encouraging and enabling equity, diversity and inclusion.
2. Commitment to standards
Members who provide, fund or commission appropriate adult services are expected to be working towards the National Standards.
We exist to support improvement, and so there is no requirement to be currently meeting all the National Standards.
3. Confidentiality
One of the key tools the network has is the networking opportunities offered to its members through conferences, network meetings and other events. For networking to be effective, members need to be able to share thoughts, concerns, issues and suggestions in an environment of mutual respect and trust. At times, sensitive information about scheme operations or finances may be discussed. By applying for membership, your organisation:
- agrees to treat all such sensitive information in confidence
- agrees not to repeat confidential information about other schemes outside the network
- agrees not to make use of such information directly in the event of seeking a contract in competition with other NAAN members
4. Fair competition
NAAN recognises that provider members may legitimately compete for contracts with other members. By applying for membership, your organisation:
- agrees not to make misleading claims about your own service in this process
- agrees not to undermine, directly or indirectly, the method of work or professionalism of other members.
What is the membership fee?
We've developed an approach to fees that is underpinned by inclusivity and equity. Fees start at £40 per year for individual bronze membership.
Membership fees vary depending on things like:
- your preferred tier (bronze, silver, or gold)
- individual or organisational membership
- the type and size of your organisation.
To cut through the complexity, just send us an email or arrange a 15 minute chat over Teams, and we'll explain all your options.
